Not a TOTAL write off, but...
Well my first ever knitting group meeting was (almost) a bust. It was supposed to meet from 6:30-8:00, I had emailed that I would be about an hour late and heard back that that wouldn't be a problem. Well I got there about 7ish and there was NO-ONE knitting in this coffee shop.
I approached a table of women (because they were the only table of more than two people) and asked if they were the knitting group. Yes, it was a long-shot, it's not like anyone was knitting or anything yarn-related. Although there was a knit hat on top of someone's purse on the table. Anyway they looked at me like I had three heads when I asked, so I figured they needed clarification; "you know, a bunch of women with pointy sticks". Well that didn't turn them into my knitting group or anything so I skulked away.
But I figured I was there anyway, maybe everyone else is just late. So I grabbed a coffee and a seat on a couch and pulled out the knitting. You know, as a flag to any fellow knitter that may come in. I left the Mother's Day mug in my bag, as I figured it might just get me thrown out sitting there knitting with attitude all by myself and all. Then a group of university-looking young women with books came in so I figured they were the group, but they walked on by to another table. I overheard the owner ask them if they were here for the knitting group to which one loudly responded "KNITTING! That sounds WAY to feminist for me!" Somehow I've never thought that a craft that I have enjoyed since I was in grade 2 would be considered "too feminist"; go figure! And what the heck is wrong with this generation that thinks "feminist" is a dirty word, like believing in equal opportunities for women is somehow bad?
Anyway about 45 minutes later I was just thinking about leaving when a woman approached me to see if I was with the knitting group. Woohoo! A fellow knitter after all! I asked if she had brought her knitting, and when she said she had I was so happy I yelled out "well whip it out Sister!" LOL
So Lisa and I had a great time getting to know each other. She's about my age give-or-take and is studying to be a midwife; how cool is that? And I got an inch or two done on my sock. So the night wasn't a total write off after all. And Lisa loved my mug!

Glad you finally met up with someone from the group. That sounds really fun. Is this a weekly group?
Bev, I've been in a long-term relationship since before I found the internet, so I can only sympathize with what online dating must be like. You know, I meet so many nice people through the internet, but there's probably some real doozies out there in dating-land!
My partner and I went to a snowmobiling weekend event about an 8 hour drive from where I live, with a bunch of people from our snowmobiling forum. Well some of the people were just how you'd imagine them, and others, well... maybe I should just leave it at that! lol
Best thing to do, just go and knit. If you get a couple of regulars, more will come!
